About

Principal assumptions
The principal mission and assumption of the new artistic institution is creating and propagating the art of contemporary dance, enriched by other forms of the art of movement (such as pantomime, classical ballet, street dance, etc.). The rich tradition of contemporary dance in Bytom and the interest of the citizens in this field of art give Bytom a chance to become Poland’s dance capital. The additional strongpoint, which will enable developing of the institution’s activity in completely different fields is the building of Rozbark mine’s Waiting Room, which is the seat of the new institution.

The essential activity of Bytom Dance and Movement Theater ROZBARK is based on three sections: artistic activity, educational activity and social activity. An addition to these forms of activity will be the commercial activity, focused on generating financial profit, which would enable the increase of the institution’s profits and at the same time lower the financial burden of the Bytom community towards ROZBARK Theater. Profits from commercial activity will also enable expanding and enriching of the offer of all sections of the essential activity.

Artistic activity
The principal assumption of the artistic activity of Bytom Dance and Movement Theater ROZBARK is creating of own performances and presentation of the most interesting performances of contemporary dance (not only), from Poland and the whole world. A culmination of activities that promote contemporary dance will be the next editions of the International Contemporary Dance Conference and Performance Festival. Being one of the biggest contemporary dance festivals in Central Europe it has for many years been an event which promotes contemporary dance as well as ensures promotion and improvement of Bytom’s image  in local and Polish media. At the same time, it is the most recognizable make of Bytom outside of Poland’s frontiers. The International Contemporary Dance Conference and Performance Festival is an artistic event owing to which the whole world of contemporary dance is brought to Bytom and the city itself becomes a showcase of Poland among the invited foreign guests. This event is composed of two main blocks: the artistic part, during which the most important performances, which create new trends in contemporary dance (not only) of both experienced choreographers and groups and artists, who are at the start of their professional dance career, are presented and the educational part made up of a number of dance workshops and educational and social projects directed to different target groups.

This event will gain a new, enriched formula with a significantly expanded workshop and seminar part, not only practical, but also theoretical and historical. The projects taking place in the municipal space will also be expanded, which will enable Bytom’s citizens a greater identification with the biggest festival in Bytom, building of both the citizen’s and the event’s identity and they will aim at creating something of a community centered around the new Dance Theater. The new formula of the Conference & Festival assumes as well a development of the offer of social programs, so that people for which the event is beyond their financial capabilities could participate in classes and performances  proposed during the event. Extremely important to the activity of Bytom Dance and Movement Theater ROZBARK will also be all kinds of disadvantaged communities, therefore a number of projects is planned for the elderly, disabled, or people excluded due to their social status.

The principal nucleus of the artistic activity of ROZBARK Theater will be the production and presentation of new performances, mainly in contemporary dance as well as other forms of movement as for example hip hop dance, classical ballet, or other. Performances will be created by various choreographers, invited to cooperation by Bytom Dance and Movement Theater ROZBARK  Thanks to that, the repertoire of ROZBARK Theater will be diversified taking into account the artistic aspect and it will enable the audience, with very different esthetic interests, finding of something for themselves from among the rich performance offer of the institution. Among own performances of Bytom Dance and Movement Theater ROZBARK there will also be open air proposals, which will enable the institution to go beyond its seat and establish a closer contact with the city’s citizens. Taking into account the role of theater education since the earliest age, which is impossible to be overrated, ROZBARK Theater plans to prepare a proposal for the youngest audience at least one time during the season. Getting the children acquainted with dancing from the earliest years, we not only develop in them healthy habits, which cultivate the care of physical fitness, but we also prepare them to consciously experience cultural events in the future, we sensitize them to art and the emotions evoked by it, in short we educate conscious and sensitive citizens.

Creating of performances is inseparably connected with presenting them to a wide audience. That is why apart from presenting at the seat, we are planning to develop the artistic tour of the group of Bytom Dance and Movement Theater ROZBARK. Presenting performances beyond the seat, in Poland and abroad will popularize the new institution, its artistic and educational output (presentations of performances may be connected with running of workshops by ROZBARK Theatre’s dancers) and it will also be a support to the promotional activities of the city of Bytom itself. What’s more, during such trips new artistic contacts are made, which as a consequence will bring about artistic exchanges between ROZBARK Theater and various dance centers in Europe and beyond it and they will also help in inviting foreign choreographers to create performances with the Bytom group. These types of actions are also a strategic element in the building the institution’s international rank and make.

Equally important as the artistic trips of the group will be impresarial activities, namely inviting artists and groups to perform on the Bytom stage during the season. This is an activity, which is necessary for the continuous development of the artistic group, which enables them familiarizing with the methods of work other than their own ones.

Artistic residency for dancers and choreographers
A greatly import ant aspect in all fields of art is exchanging of experiences, therefore beside the Conference & Festival and guest and away performances one should create an interesting program of artistic residency for dancers and choreographers from abroad and put special accent on strict cooperation with foreign dance centers with a profile of activity similar to that of Bytom Dance and Movement Theater ROZBARK. Only in such way the newly created institution has a chance to come into being internationally and also offer the best quality of its actions. Other forms of such exchange are: foreign traineeships for dancers employed in ROZBARK Theater or international coproduction of performances.

The next aim of the activity of Bytom Dance and Movement Theater ROZBARK is creating a possibility of development and presentation to young (not always professional) contemporary dance groups, which are more and more numerous and active in Poland. A rich program of supporting young talents, presenting their output on a professional scene as well as enabling them to make use of the theater’s genuine professional technical facilities will result in the development of the dance community in Poland and will strengthen Bytom’s position as the biggest and most expansively acting dance center in our country. The close vicinity of the Ludomir Różycki Ballet School and the Department of Dance Theater of Ludwik Solski Academy for the Dramatic Arts, which institutions let out dozens of young graduates into the world without ensuring a possibility of developing their talents and presenting their output, is not without significance. Bytom Dance and Movement Theater ROZBARK may fill this gap.

The above-mentioned profiles of activity will certainly be supplemented by other thematic events related to dance and movement on an ongoing basis. In the offer of Bytom Dance and Movement Theater ROZBARK there will surely also be exhibitions dedicated to different parts of dance, projections of dance movies, or registered performances, meetings with interesting artists, and various other supplementary activities. In the long term, it is possible to continue the European Festival of Contemporary Dance, organized in Bytom and Cracow, with the support of such institutions as: Goethe-Institut in Cracow, Austrian Italian Cultural Institute, Italian Cultural Institute, British Council, and other.

Commercial activity
Taking into account the ever-changing economic conditions in the world and having in mid the constantly evolving role of culture in society, Bytom Dance and Movement Theater ROZBARK cannot limit its activity to artistic, educational, and social activities. In the current conditions, it is also necessary to undertake commercial activity, which will support the institution’s budget, while unburdening the organizer’s budget and at the same time it will open the activity of ROZBARK Theater to those sectors of the economy, which so far have been closed to this type of institution. The commercial activity of the institution will be based on making use of available spaces, human resources, and instruments for generating financial profit. The seat of the institution will give many possibilities in this scope, i.e. generating profits from renting of various spaces (hotel part, gyms, or business conferences), running of a café or renting of advertising space. We are planning to organize closed performances for companies as well as dance settings of company and commercial events. The principal commercial activity may also be supplemented by publications connected with dance and movement as well as payable performances of dancers in strictly commercial undertakings.

A financial support to the activity of Bytom Dance and Movement Theater ROZBARK may also be the foundation established alongside of it, which will make possible applying for grants and funds inaccessible to artistic institutions of the self-government.
